A research group at the
department of Building Technology is working to develop transparent composite
materials that can safely be used in building structures. CCL grips were chosen
in this most intriguing application of structural glass in architecture.
This is
done to combine the unique characteristic of transparency with the flexibility
of load bearing elements like beams and columns. This is an extremely
interesting engineering situation
because unlike a steel beam that will noticeably yield on overloading, glass has
no visible built-in warning system.
